Liner Notes
Lloyd Miller (Gol-e-Gondom 86’) 7” single
Live at Salt Lake City’s infamous underground jazz fallout DB Cooper’s. Discovered on a long lost tape cassette in Dr. Lloyd Miller’s archives. Part of a live broadcasted jazz set on local radio KUER as part of their weekly live jazz program. The persian traditional song “Gol-e-Gondom” is considered a hallmark of Miller’s repertoire, since the mid 60’s when he first adapted it to a modal jazz piece. This newly discovered rendition is one of the best known efforts of the tune, and features long time collaborator Michael Johnson playing a synthesizer wind instrument, which is a rare occasion for Lloyd, as he prefers to not include electronic sounding instruments in his music.
Lloyd leads the tune with an incredible Santur (dulcimer) solo and is at his highest peak of musicianship on the ancient persian instrument. He also solo’s on the middle eastern Zarb hand drum later in the song. Unfortunately the supporting band is unknown, but they are evidence of one of the slickest groups that Miller has played with.
