The Plastic Age Mix 13: World Arts on Tape
World Arts on Tape
Cassette Collection from Lloyd Miller and wife Kathrine St. John
Adam Michael Terry curates an adventurous selection of “world music” tape artifacts from the home music collection, art and dance performance tracks, and academic archive materials from the Millers. Lloyd and Kathrine St. John founded the World Arts organization in which the celebration, study, and practice of cultural art forms are practiced and performed. From dance to music, to poetry, and more. Both scholars earned advanced degrees in these fields and published several books and dissertations in these fields.
Kathrine and Lloyd gifted Adam a plastic bag full of cassette tapes from their collection, which they felt could use a new life.
Adam took on the enjoyable task of combing through the plastic artifacts and put together a DJ set of his favorite pieces. Mixed out of the Technics tape deck through the Pioneer djm-400, Adam applies blending techniques and expressive FX to add his personal touch.
The setlist is designed in a way that the listener is taken on a voyage of humanity through different cultures and musical approaches, thus creating a sonic mosaic that represents a portion of the breadth of study the Millers’ obtain.
From primitive modes and instruments to computer composition and new age synthesizers, the various textures of human creativity are explored through this mix called. “World Arts on Tape”.
Pay attention to the different approaches of musical thought and expression as you are taken from the cradle of civilization, migrating to South America, to the Middle East, to Europe, Scandinavia, to the Far East, and even into the Delta Blues by way of India.
